Default PPI advice for Newbie

Hi all,

It’s been 25 years that I’m dreaming to own a Porsche 911sc and I have decided that the time has come.

I’m currently doing my homework reading this board and others, also ordered Peter Zimmermann’s book. I have found very interesting discussion and advice. This is a great forum. I’m looking forward to start contributing.

Now, I might have found a good 911sc.
It’s a 1983 911sc Targa. It has about 80k miles.
From what the current owner told me, the car had different maintenance done during the last 6000 miles. Clutch, valve and others. It has the hydraulic chain tensioners upgrade and the pop-up valve installed. All documented.
Car looks clean, although I didn’t see it with my eyes yet.

My question for the expert:

There is no doubt that I will have a PPI done.
Included in one of the inspection conducted 4000 miles ago, the previous owner had a compression test on the engine. Documented.
Here’s the numbers PO gave me: #1-160, #2-155, #3-165, #4-165, #5-160, #6-160

Should I still schedule a leak down test knowing those numbers?
Dealer is asking me 4.5 hours @ 100$ just for that test. Not that I don’t want to buy that insurance policy, but I have numbers that might indicate a good engine.

Thanks for you help

Ian

There are those that will strongly recommend a leak down test regardless of the compression numbers. Myself, when I bought my 84 Carrera my compression numbers were low to mid 170's across the board and I opted to pass on the leak down test, with no regrets. i have now put 60k miles on my P-car which now totals up to 154k with now problems. So that's my story.
If money is not a concern for you, have the leak down test done; if money is a bit a of concern, with those numbers you've shown, I'd pass.
Oh and by the way the folks here on this board like to see lots of photos - FYI.

Thanks for your reply.

I think I'll go with the leak down test anyway.
I'll make sure to post photos when I have a car.

That sounds excessive. Is this a Porsche dealer or an independent dealer? An independent specialist will usually know older cars better than P dealers.

Ian

This is from a Porsche dealer.
I'll try to find an independent shop.
Anyone knows and recommend a Porsche shop in the Mississauga (Ontario) area?

Thanks

Brent at Hunter Motorsports (Mississauga) or the guys at Autowerks (Off 400 north of 7) are both good.

And for Toronto & Ontario content, the Rennlist - Ontario forum is pretty active with weekend get-to-gethers , fun runs etc.
