Post How to change from black to chrome window trim

Hi all,

I have blacked out trim on my 74 and wanted to find out the level of effort and cost to go back to chrome. Does this require removal of windsheild and rear windows?

Thanks
Lefty

i don't think it's chrome. i believe it's polished/clearcoated?

don't know how much it would cost; just trying to save you the cost of chromming. maybe you can just use paintremover and then polish.

On my '74, the trim was actually brushed aluminum, not chrome, with the exception of the joint connectors. If your trim is chrome, was not prep sanded (which will have marred the original chrome finish), and painted black, the paint should come off fairly easy (if you haven't noticed already) and won't require removal of the glass. (Glass removal will require new seals as well) If aluminum or chrome, an appropriate solvent should will work well, but you can use a fine grit (400 - 600) sand paper if needed on aluminum.

It should have been polished and anodised (assuming no-one has already messed with the factory finish).

I would try solvent - I dunno if that affects the anodising though.

What happened to the car was it was transformed from a straight 74 to a 74 Carrera look. Either they replaced with black or prepared and painted the trim black. Maybe I can remove the black and polish with a Dremmel?

You can - the polishing will (eventually) remove the anodising if it is still there.

The problem is that unanodised aluminium needs repolishing periodically.

Also, on a targa, some bits are chrome plated brass, I think. Maybe not on a '74?

So that trim is not chrome, it is just polished and anodized aluminum?

If you polished one of the faded black anodized pieces, would it come out looking like the chrome-like ones?
