DME Unit

I took my 86 Carrera cab in to have the steering wheel and bad window switch replaced. The next day I get a call that the DME unit went bad, and my baby won't start. This never happened before, she always started right up.
My question is this, could they have shorted out the DME unit when changing the steering wheel or window switch?
I've gotten conflicting opinions on this. Does anyone know?
Thanks

I think it si possible, anytime you mess around wiht the electrics you run the risk of a short. I know I blew a DME when I shorted it, however it was in a track only car so I was messing with the DME wires directly.

If the car will turn over, then try the DME relay. If it is bad, the starter will turn the engine, but no fire is getting through the relay to the ignition, therefore it won't start. That's what happened to me. A 10mm socket is needed to remove the nut and then just remove and replace. I would suggest plugging a good one in for a check prior to putting the 10mm nut back. If this doesn't fix it, then it may be the DME brain box. Additionally, if it is the Relay, get an extra and put it in the glove box as a spare. I have read where this is an item that fails frequently on Carrera's.

is this a real porsche shop? kind of unlikely the computer just went bad. they must need money. bring your own relay and plug it in. it's the black plastic unit right next to the computer, under the driver's seat. you can pull the plug off of it and just plug the new one in without unbolting the old one.
