Picked up my new 87 Carrera yesterday and having some problmes getting it into reverse. I did have a PPI on car and mech. said only problem was AC needed charged. I am applying a great deal of pressure to my level get into R gear,Clutch is smooth, what am I missing??
On the subject of shifting, was having problem getting into 1st. figured out not to push into gear but slow light pressure and level seems to slide into gear by itself. Still working on smooth transition from 1st to 2nd.
Any thoughts would be great
Thanks
Jerry
PS..orginal clutch, assume G50 upgrade not done

The G50 is not an "upgrade" but a type of transmission that pre-88 cars (like your Carrera or my SC have). I guess you could change the 915 tranny (the one that we have) for a G50 but will probably not be worth it $$$$.
As for the gear problem, after one week of ownership I can tell you that you will get used to it after a few days. Last Saturday I let my father-in-law drive the car and had a hard time not laughing since he was not able to get one single gear change ok.
In my car, when you move the lever to the right to engage 5th or R there is a spring that you must engage(?) before being able to get into the gear. Check if you have the same.
Enjoy your car. The more you drive it the better you will use the gear change.

G50's first appeared in the 1987 Carrera, which began production in mid 1986, but were still labeled 1987's. If you have an '87, you definitely have a G50. I dropped my engine and tranny this past weekend and saw a transmission number on (I believe) the passenger side of the bell housing. The G50 numbers start with "950". I'd be a little concerned about having difficulty with reverse or first. I've had an old BMW for a long time, so the shift pattern is the same with my 911 and every girl who drives either of my cars seems to have trouble getting both into reverse. I don't mean to suggest you're not "manly" enough to handle a P-car. But reverse requires a bit of muscle to move the shifter all the way left. If, however, sliding it forward into gear is tough, you may have worn synchros - not as common in G50's as in 915's, but it does happen.

87 Porsche came out with G50, upgrade I was asking about was something about needle bearing wearing out on 87-89 G50's. Porsche currently offers upgrade bearings for 87-89 G50's. I was wondering what effect old/new bearing have on shifting.

Thanks John,
Too many errors in just one post. I will shut up <img src="graemlins/icon501.gif" border="0" alt="[icon501]" /> for the rest of the day. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

The improved factory G50 cross-shaft bearings don't necessarily affect shifting. The new bearings and shaft address clutch actuation problems. A stiff clutch pedal can sometimes be attributed to the original style cross-shaft and bearings.

The 1-2 on most g50s seems to be a little "stiff" or notchy, when the car is
cold. It should smooth out as the oil warms up. You can try the Mobil 1. I
did, but didn't notice a difference.
As I mentioned before, it takes some force to get the gear shift over to
reverse, but once it's there the gear should engage smoothly.

Mine's a little stiff (65K mi.) for the first 1-2 shift on a cold start. I just double clutch it and it's no problem. After that, pretty uneventful.
Funny thing about the reverse engagement. It's stiff when you're looking for reverse. When you're not looking for reverse, you'll get reverse. Say, for instance, you're daydreaming at the signal and the light goes green. You ****** the shifter and pull left for first to get going. Too hard a pull and you're now in reverse. Kinda startling the first time it happens to you. I personally like reverse below fifth if I were given a choice!!!!!

Jerry:
On my SC (915 transmission), which had 1st and 2nd redone about 20K miles ago. I often have problems getting into reverse. If I go forward slightly, in any gear, it then easily goes into reverse.
This might not be the way it is supposed to work but I can live with it.

A couple things I always do: before putting it in first I grab 2nd and then go straight up......always engages perfectly. do the same with reverse, grab 2nd and the throw the lever over into reverse and blip the throttle on both if you're having a bit of trouble to help it in gear.
