thinking 911 carrera
I love my 86 951, I have finally sorted it close to new, awaiting CPRs' splitter, 968 door handles and mirrors ordered. Just installed new dash, new hvac, new koni's, new rack and pinion, water pump belts/rollers, new 996 seats, new fog lamps, new alpine stereo, speakers, with sat receiver under dash, new yoko... tires, vented rocker panels in hand.
I have driven my car 40kmiles as a daily driver and it has never let me down.
Now I am considering buying a 87 200kmile 911 carrera thats had no major engine work. I don't have room for 3 vehicles so if I get another my 951 has to go, truck stays.
What do you think I should do ? The 911 is a bad *** looking car, so is the 951, never cared much for the interior reminds me of a VW. What to do what to do, opinions pros and cons please

My first p-car was an '85 944 back in the early 90's ..it was a good car but it's doesn't come close to a 911 in my opinion. The body lines of the 911 is timeless, they still follow it to this day and of course the 911 air cooled engine pre 996. I also have a '06 997 but I always find myself driving '84 911M491 at lot more. Its a different driving experience.
Regarding the car you're buying, I would get a PPI to make sure the engine is sound. I'm surprised that no engine work has been done. I'm guessing that a top rebuilt would have been done by now, I maybe wrong but I don't think the valve guides will last this long (200K miles). Perhaps someone can chime in.

from what I understand, a puff of smoke is normal when you first start the car but it should stop when then engine warms up and you start driving. Is this the case with the car you're interested in?

Get a PPI and at the very least get a leak down/compression test. Make sure that the motor is solid. The Carrera motor is a great motor and as long as the maintenance has been done should not let you down. It sounds like you like to do you most of your own work and I find it easier to work on the 911 than the 44's or 68's. 4 bolts, wires, and lines and the motor is out. Very easy!!

Take your time, prices are still dropping.
Nice 88 Carrera vert on Pelican for $14k

Can't have 2 porsches must sell one, 911 or 930.
Great buy on this 911, new brakes, rotors calipers and master cyl., recent valve job and rings, stainless steel exhaust, m&k 2 in 1 out, SW chip to match, new belstien sport shocks, new tires, just reupholstered front and rear seats, new convertible top, about 1 year old, just replaced the cables, always garaged, oil changed every 2000 miles, no accidents, the body is straight, new wheel bearings, this car is tight, drives like brand new.
Very few things need to be done, a couple plastic heater control slider ***** missing, cig. lighter, and the rear main seal is leaking, very small amount but should be replaced.
$14,000.00 over $40,000.00 invested, the IRS and I came up with different figures, guess who's going to win. Need to sell
Wish I had the extra cash

Very good deals around these days. So tempted to dump the targa for a coupe. Although I wouldn't be able to sell it for a lot and I don't know if I could lose those lipstick red seats.
