Default Fuchs Restoration

Washed them, sanded with 600 grit, taped off with electrical tape for a nice edge then masked the rest. Sprayed with VHT satin black epoxy (purple can).

It was 30 degrees in the garage so I warmed them up inside and sprayed in the laundry room (with a respirator). Wife is pissed but she'll forgive me!
Attachment 321843
Fired up the old stove and let them "cure" for the day.
Attachment 321844
Nice clean lines!!
Attachment 321845
Came out better than expected!
Attachment 321846
All done and ready to mount tires
I don't think I'll be putting Wiedeman out of business but for $10 in materials and four hours work I'm pretty ok with it.
Goodyear Eagle F1's get mounted this Friday then we'll see how well these fit on a narrow body '77.

Very nice job.

A car painter told me years ago that you can get reasonable results from spray cans if you warm up the can in a pot of warm water beforehand, and if you warm up the piece to be painted with a hot air gun. Seems to really help.

BTW I had my Fuchs powder coated and polished at Andial a few years back. Hopefully that will last another 20 years.

Wow, nice job and you really got a nice clean edge. Did you use 600 grit to just do a rough sand on the old paint, or did you sand them down to bare metal first?

No, I didn't go to bare metal. The sanding was just to smooth out any imperfections in the old paint and to provide a rough surface for the new paint to adhere to. No sanding scratches at all with the 600 grit.

I have 16" x 6" Fuchs on all 4 corners of my '77. What size are those?

Did you paint the silver around the rim too? They look good.

Very nice!! Since my car is a D.D. I don't really have the option to let the wheels sit for to long. I would love to do mine black.... Now to find a set of wheels that I can borrow for a week or so.....

i am working on the polishing before i paint so i don't damage the paint. I am having a tough time with this using polishing compounds and mag cleaner. if anyone has any suggestions i am all ears.

Two are 16x7 911 and two are 16x7 951. I originally bought the 951 wheels because I had heard the offset was different and would allow greater clearance to run larger tires under a narrow body rear end. This turned out to be a myth. The offset and backspacing are the same for both types of 16x7 fuchs wheels. The difference is that the mounting flanges are "thicker" which pushes the center out to allow greater clearance for BIG brake calipers. I already had the 911 sevens so I decided to run a set of four sevens with the 951 wheels up front. From what I've gathered 205/50's should clear. I am running 205/50's now on 16x6 wheels and they fit fine with the exception that the 205's look a little wide for the 6 inch rim. I cranked in the max negative camber on the rear that the stock eccentric adjusters will allow. Tomorrow I will mount the tires and find out how this setup really works as far as fender clearance is concerned. Then I'll post more pics.

Nope, just painted the centers. The rims were hand polished with a little Blue Magic.

I didn't spend much time polishing, mostly just cleaned up the finish that was already there. Someone better versed in this topic may correct me but I believe some of these wheels are anodized. If this is the case you would have to sand through the hard anodized finish to get to the soft aluminum underneath before you could truly "polish" the aluminum. Once you did this, of course, they would oxidize quickly and you'd be spending your weekends on your knees with a rag and can of aluminum polish. I polished after I painted because I didn't want to contaminate the painted area with silicone, wax and other agents in the polish. I don't know what level of shine you're trying to achieve but I wasn't after the "mirror shine" aluminum, just a clean stock finish.

You did a great job painting the wheels and I look forward to seeing more pics of them mounted.

I am running 205 40 series tires on 16 x 6 Fuchs. I like the lower gearing for acceleration and handling, but want to fill out the fender with wider meat when the best way to do this reveals itself.

Right now I'm waiting for a set of 16 x 7 to try on the rear with the widest 40 series tires that will fit the rim properly.
