Default 1976 911S Targa - Targa Top Catch question

Greetings folks!

My baby needs some lovin'

1976 911S Targa

Part in question: 911-565-031-41-M100 (from Pelican Parts)

I've replaced this item once, at a moderate price, only to have the 'tongs' that catch the release handle snap off like they were melted butter. I'm wondering if anyone has any alternatives, quick fix suggestions, or anything that may save me from spending another $400+ to get this item fixed.

Unfortunately, my skills fall in the computer category, not the mechanical side. I'm not good in the shop and generally rely on North Shore Import Sportscars to fix issues (they're great!). I'm planning on paying them a visit in a bit, but would like to go in with a few alternatives.

Many thanks to anyone who can supply an idea!
