What is the diameter and thickness of the 930 wheel?

+1 on the 930 wheel; it's what I have in mine.....although the stock wheel LOOKS fine, IMO.

My issue with the Prototipo is that it is too small (disrupts the guages.) Yes, I know that there is an offset hub that can be purchased. If I could find the 370mm Prototipo, then that would be a different story. The 930S is a nice steering wheel, but as was the original intent of the thread (OEM), I think the SC wheels are better looking/feeling than the Carrera wheels.

The 930S wheel is pretty big too, and the hub it comes with offsets the wheel upwards (off-center). I think it's 360mm so not much smaller than stock. I don't know what wheel would be better for now though. I like the Carrera wheel over the SC wheel, incidentally, I think the SC wheel is too chunky (I have a Momo Race on my SC now).

I don't like the Carrera wheel either. It actually causes discomfort in my hand after a while. It's too skinny and I don't like the angular shape. The diameter is a bit too big for me.

I just got a 930 wheel --- feels great. I would prefer to not have the offset upward since I'm short, but the wheel itself is fantastic.

vtc mart,

I have a replica 930S steering wheel, and the diameter is 14" and the rim width is 1.2 inches, or 30mm.

I like the 911SC wheel because it looks very period correct. It has a sort of Star Wars 1970s look to it, like an Atari video game console.

But the 3.2 Carrera wheel looks more timeless and sophisticated to me. It is defintely looks better when leather upholstered. The factory Porsche steering wheels are always well made, long lasting, and heavy compared to aftermarket wheels.

I also have a Fittipaldi E3 steering wheel that I like, but the spokes are a bit too flexible.

The worst steering wheel I have owned was a "Dino" steering wheel that the PO of my car had when I bought it. He GAVE the original 911 steering wheel to a guy who drove a Volvo. I guess it fit, I dunno.

wheels are a matter of personal preference big time. If you prefer one over another then it's the right one for you. Luckily its one of the easiest things to change and because you're hanging on to it all the time, it's one of the most notable things in the car.

I tried a few different ones before going back to the stock SC wheel, albeit with a re-trim in suede and leather

Can I ask you about that console? That's a great addition.

yeah I like it a lot. to me it looks as though it should have been there from the factory.
I got it from a firm in the states called better bodies. a google search should turn them up.

the console was very simple to fit and the only downside is that you lose the use of the ash tray. no biggy.
the cover over the handbrake is on a sliding mech, to give access to the brake and the heater controls.
I used the facia panel to house my electric window switches and an additional oil pressure gauge as a backup (I get paranoid about oil pressure), but you could put anything you wanted in there.

here's some more pics:

I love the 930S wheel. I got mine from Porsche directly about a year ago, they had a few left back then. I took the offset spacer off before installing, it just unbolts from the hub. I'm 6'3" and with the stock wheel and standard shifter my 81 Targa is a PITA to drive, however, I installed tha factory short shift kit and the 930S wheel, and I have plenty of room for my right leg.

Make sure you get the real Porsche factory piece with the embossed crest in the horn hub. Look on e-bay too.

I always love the momo, have had them in my last 3 cars. I like the 930 steering wheel to but ergonomically i've always trusted momo.

I prefer the Carrera over the SC wheel, but the 930s is so much better than either. Looks correct too.

I had the opportunity to drive a 944 with a 930S wheel last spring and it was a terrific feeling wheel. And of course it has that heavy, solid feel of all the OEM Porsche wheels.

I had bought a Prototipo, but ended up selling it before I installed it for various reasons. Right now, I am just going to re-finish my Carrera wheel, which is a nice looking wheel, just a little off ergonomically for me.

Although I do prefer the Carrera wheel look to the SC, it is not by a huge margin, and I would not mind an SC wheel either (and it may actually feel better than the Carrera from the look of it...)

Don't like the Carrera wheel at all. The SC is definitely better IMHO, but I'm not a big fan it that either. I went with a Momo, and just a tad smaller diam with a thicker rim. The latter is the biggest improvement, that and the looks, of course
