Default Cant get trunk shock nut off

New front Bilstein shock in boge strut. I think gland nut is loose causing a rattle or I have a defective insert. Didn't have special Bilstein tool and used a pipe wrench on the gland nut. The trunk nut loosens but then the shock threaded top spins so I can't get the nut all the way off. There is a small indent in the shock threaded top in trunk. How can I hold the trunk threaded shock top while loosening the nut? Want to then push the shock down to get at the gland nut. Thanks in advance. Frustrating doing jobs twice!

Glad you got it.

For future searches, an impact wrench removes the nut quite easily.

Problem was the big mounting washer underneath the nut had lost the tab that was supposed to stop the shock from spinning. Had to push on the cover underneath to "pinch" the shock from being able to turn. Need to find a new mounting washer now.

The washer is actually suppose to be bent up to keep the nut from spinning, not keep the shock from spinning. You should be able to reuse it if you didn't damage it in its removal.

I am speaking of the large washer under the one that bends up as a lock. It sits one the rubber bushing. The big one below has the tab which fits into shock to prevent rotation. Found one today at Pelican. Thanks for the interest. Glenn
PS How old?
