How much modification is necessary to put a complete 993 engine and 6 sp tranny (from '96 911) into an '88 911? Is this a possible conversion? I would not be doing the work myself.
All input is greatly appreciated.

The 993 motor is the easier piece -- and even it's going to be hard. Here's a quote from the Instant G website:
"# 1996-1998 993 US Varioram Engines: These are a major hassle ot install. Conversion harnesses are not readily available. On these engines, the computer is OBD-II compliant which means that any change to the chip mapping will disable the DME unit. Additionally the alarm system is integral with the computer system. If you go this route plan on spending $1000-1500 to have someone disable the alarm and upgrade the performance maps. Also be aware that no after market chips are available for these units."
And then there's the G50, which is going to mean moving your engine an inch further back (hurting your weight distribution), and either modifying the torsion tubes, or going to coil-overs. It also involves spending a lot of money.
Take a look at the FAQ from I-G:

Anything is possible w/ enough $. The 993 engine is not a big problem I and several others here have done that transplant as well as quite a few 964s in early cars.
The issue will be the transmission which is longer than G50 currently in your car. The usual path to t/p a 6 spd is to cut out the torsion bar tube and use a coil over suspension w/ properly reinforced suspension pickup points. The trans tunnel will then need to be cut out and a sheetmetal cover fashioned. There is more info here from tgfab

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll work on just the engine and keep the G50 I've got.
Instant-G looks interesting. Anyone with personal experience with them or their products?
