Post 71 Targa 911E 2.2 help need info

Finally finished my 76 911s and now I have found another. I found a 71 Targa 911E 2.2 that's a little rough.... It runs and actually sounded pretty good, I drove it for about 15 minutes and everything seemed fine. I would have to guess with the oil leaks it goes through a quart every 400 Miles. it has a new gas tank, brakes, fuel pump, and he going to throw in 4 original 6" Fuchs ( the wheels on it now are steel with snow tires). It has unknown mileage, interior is crap, enough grease and oil to start a major fire on the bottom of the engine. It's another complete rebuild project, but the good news is the body is staight and relativley rust free. What are the pros and cons of the 2.2L engine(has fuel injection), and the tranny? Is the 2.2 worth the rebuild money? If I get it I'm dropping the engine the first week just to clean it and then inspect it. The guy selling it wants $5000. Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

Sounds like my project! I've owned a '70E coupe going on 2 years now and just pulled the motor Memorial Day weekend toget a better idea of what's next. Original 2.2E MFI motor that just needs a rebuild...or cleaning (depending on my wallet). In my opinion a worthwhile investment to rebuild yours, from what I've learned the 2.2 is a solid reliable motor. Sounds like the $5000 is a totally fair price based on the nearly rust free body and lots of new parts. My car has been resprayed the original color and otherwise is very original (14" Fuchs, MFI intact, etc.). In short it sounds like a good buy that would be worth the effort to give her a second life. Good luck! Pete

Yes, the body is in great shape!!!! That saves bunches right there. The 75 911s I have had to have both doors, hood, and engine lid replaced. It's one giant pain in the butt to get those things lined back up just right when you replace them. They always seen like there off just a little (nothing like original). The reason I ask is I've already been through the engine swap thing with my 75 2.7L, went to a 3.0 after I found how much it would cost to rebuild the 2.7 the right way. Do you have any trouble with the top leaking in yours? I've heard stories that most all of them leak, is this true?
Thanks for the response
Mike

MIKERJ,

Sounds like a great buy! I am close to finalizing in the same price range with an E. My mechanic told me it would be better to convert it to a carb set up. The only problem is the carb set up is very expensive now. I believe PMO is the only supplier and it cost about 3 grand for the carbs to do this. To me it would be better to find a nice 3.0 engine and have it installed. The E i guess gets horrible gas mileage and is hard to adjust for some mechanics.

Let us know if you get it !

PS: Is the car irish green? I seen one posted on a classified section for about the same price.

Cheers

Mike, My car (1970 911E) is a coupe so no leaky tops here although I have heard the same stories you have. The '71 targa I own is a "parts car" but I haven't gotten up the nerve to actually part her out yet! If you get this car will you keep the motor or try the 3 liter transplant? I'm finding that MFI related things get expensive but to me it's worth it rather than going to carbs. Post some pics if you can! Pete
