I've got me a '84 Carrera (best damn car ever!) ![Stick Out Tongue](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
Anyways, can you tell me at what temp the oil thermostat is suppose to open up?
I drove all the way to work this morning, 50 miles, and when I got to work I touched the oil cooler, up front underneath the right fender and it wasn't even warm. The oil temp gauge was just below the second hash mark from the bottom.
Thanks in advance.
Every one have great day.

Thank you Steve.
Also, I need to correct my statement; "The oil temp gauge was just below the second hash mark from bottom.." Actually, it's not the Second hash mark, it's the first hash mark from the bottom.

When you say oil thermostat...Steve is correct, there's one on the engine and one in the right rear whell well. From your first comment "when I got to work I touched the oil cooler, up front underneath the right fender and it wasn't even warm", that is the front oil cooler, not a thermostat. Your car must be running cool since that first hash mark is 60 C and the second one is 90 C which is approximately 190-195 F. By the way, those 4 hash marks start at 60 C and increse by 30 C respectively (60 C, 90 C, 120 C, 150 C).

You may need a new sender. Check out page 60 of the "101 Projects for you Porsche 911". Tells you what to look for and the fact that that gauge is probably the least important on your car.

I have a 1985 in N. Cal and in the winter (like now) the temp rarely gets over the first hash mark.
Only when ambient temps get, say 75F+, will the guage register at or over first mark.
There is a oil cooler on the right side of engine that is controlled by the thermostat on the top right of engine. It kicks in just below the first mark.
The second thermostat in the right rear fender controls the oil cooler under the right front fender. This one kicks in at approximately the first mark on guage. It is slightly higherthan the other.
In the winter I can't usually get the guage to register up the first mark even at highway speeds and long distance.
So your experience is consistent with mine.
