Looking at getting a second 911 for a daily driver. I'm looking into an older SC or Carrera. I have thought about another G5O car but there is a nice 915 equipped Carrera for sale locally. Has 100k miles but the top end and clutch have been replaced. What kind of things should I watch out for on the pre G50 cars? What should I be looking for in the clutch and gearbox? Is the Carrera a decent daily driver?

As an owner of two '85 Carerra's I believe the same pre purchase precautions apply to these cars as would the G50 cars or '87-'89. You'll find the 915 tranmission is a different animal. You'll also see numerous post debating the G50 vs. the 915. All I can say is a good 915 trans shifts fine...once you understand the shift points and do the 'pause' thing between 1 - 2nd gear. They don't like to be forced and will respond with syncro problems if you do.

Agreed.
I'm at ~92k now on my '84, and just replaced the clutch & had the trans rebuilt because of the synchros. PO liked to drag her, I have a 13-second slip in there somewhere, in fact.
Brake hoses. Fluid Swap.
Trans Flush if not recent.
Make sure the heat's working well, likely more of a concern than the AC for you. Dedicated snows vs. all-seasons. The usual stuff. O2 is EXPENSIVE for early 3.2's vs. laters. Had to replace the head temp sensor also on mine. Some things started working better when driven more frequently (speedo pickup for example). Plan on the suspension rubber to be toast. I picked up drilled zimmermann rotors for ~$420 shipped all 4 corners from memory... solved some issues when I did that. Headlights will be an issue, look to an upgrade for a DD I would say.
Enjoy!
