Default Planning to get a 1978 911sc Targa...need advice

Hello all,

My name is Ian and I am planning on trading my Mustang Saleen for a 1978 911sc Targa. I know about cars and what to look for when viewing a used car, but not specifically a Porsche. Are there any items that I should pay close attention to when looking at this car? Are there issues with this model that I should steer away from?

Any and all suggestion, opinions, and advice are geatlt appreciated!

Thanks!

Start by getting Peter Zimmermann's book "The Used 911 Story" at Amazon or Performance Products. Then figure out the search button and look up '78 911's. Head studs is all that comes to mind. I want to know what # Saleen you got.

Try you local library for books. The library in Columbia, the capital of SC, population ~100,000, has over a dozen books on the 911 including buyers guides. This might by your quickest route. Or find a local Porsche club member that will be glad to help.

A1Yola. I just sent you a PM. I see you are new to this forum. If you don't know what that means, write me back and I will explain.

Avoid the "rubber" clutch at all costs.

If it has A/C remove it.

Sorry , just don't agree with the above post, Firstly you won't be able to tell if you have a rubber clutch visually, secondly i think the rubber centred clutch works, it just fails in a different way to other clutches and can help keep gear rattle down on later cars.

Not to mention the 78 never came with a rubber clutch.

The AC I agree with . my personal feeling is no SC or Carrera has A/C , some are just hampered by the extra weight

I knew that would get me in trouble....I like that era saleens. I had a co-worker with one that she got as a one year old used car for just under $50,000. She sent it back to saleen for a tune up and found out it was an $80,000 car. I like them, that's all.

Clive (theiceman) likes his '78 targa, heck I think we all do, so go for it.

I`d pm Clive too...he`s dropped his engine and really seems to know what to look for. Plus he`s a good guy.
