Default Speaker grill removal on '79 911SC

I'm upgrading the stereo and speakers on my godson's '79 911 SC. Today I tried removing the original factory door speaker grills and found they didn't easily pry off. I decided to RTFM at that point but did not find anything in my old factory shop manuals. A check with "Up Fixin" and also with "101Projects for your 911" were also done to no avail. Nowhere could I find a clue about removing these grills. Can anyone help?

They just pry off. You have to be careful, but that's how they are removed.

there are small circular clips on the back of the speaker covers. Either pry off and hope you do not break the tabs off the speaker covers, or just take off the complete door panel and pry them off with a screwdriver from the backside (safest method).

I removed the door cover entirely and replaced the speakers with larger ones and put in new speaker grilles. I use a pressed HARD wood 1/2" spacer.

These are integral to the door panels, so take the panel off first and then tackle it.

Thanks to everyone for your concern and for your assistance. The answer, it seems, is to remove the door panels. I'll do it this weekend. Thanks again to all of you.
