Default REVS UP AND DOWN, "RICH" EXHAUST

My '84 Targa occasionally starts to rev up and down and emit a "rich' exhaust while idling and also suffers an occasional "hiccup" while in motion. I recently put on a new non-stock muffler and wonder if the different back pressure is the cause. Any thoughts will be appreciated. TIA

Not too old; I replaced the original not too long after purchasing the car about 10 years(35,000 mi) ago.

10yrs and 35K mi is getting there. Certainly would be worth it to check it to see if it works.

Mine was doing the same thing and the repair was easy. The cruise cable was tight at idle and doing battle with the ecu to set idle, sort of an electrical-mechanical fight. I just backed off the tension, much like a brake cable on a bicycle and all was well. Bob
