Question Speedometer not working?

An odd thing occurred with my '87 911 today. I'm at the gas station and reset the trip odo after filling it up. I drive off and notice the speedometer, and for that matter the odo, is not working. Pull off to the side of the road and flick the speedo glass with finger, jiggle and press the trip odo reset button. Drive away and the speedometer still doesn't work. Drive another 5 miles to intermediate destination and shut the car off and leave it for a awhile. Get in, start it up, flick the dial again, jiggle the reset button and drive off. Voila! Speedometer and odo works! What is going on here? Is this just a case of the odo reset button hanging up something inside the speedometer so that none of the gears and cables were working?
