I went with a spring center clutch kit from Saks. Since doing the change, I've observed that the spring center clutch will transmit more noise from the tranny into the car, especially at low RPM's. I'm told that it's the rattle from the UNengaged gears that makes the noise, and the rubber center was better at masking it. I don't notice it at all anymore, and I found it reminded me not to lug the engine below 2000 RPM.

I sourced the parts myself and then brought everything to my indy mechanic. I believe labor was around $1200 or so for everything, but I'd have to go back to my records to know for sure.

HTML Code:
Part Part No. Price Supplier
Saks clutch kit (spring)	CK4S	739	VertexAuto.com
updated clutch fork	95011608606	135	VertexAuto.com
pilot bearing 93110211100	6.01	germanimportedparts.com
updated guide tube	95011681306	47.50	germanimportedparts.com
pivot shaft update kit	964116710kit	179	VertexAuto.com
Rear main seal 99911342641	17.55	germanimportedparts.com
*fuel filter 92811025306	18.10	germanimportedparts.com
*oil therm o-ring	99970731440	2.40	germanimportedparts.com
*oil pressure sender	91160623000	7.29	germanimportedparts.com
*sound pad 91155689101	54	VertexAuto.com
* these items were not required for the clutch, but were leaking and/or worn out, so I replaced them while the engine was out.

The only item I ended up buying locally was the pivot shaft update, because I was unsure whether the kit from VertexAuto had needle bearings or bushings, and I knew which one the shop had in stock. Otherwise, I bought everything from these two places after shopping around online. Just after I placed my order, Vertex sent me a "10% off your order" coupon... oh well.

Germanimportedparts.com will ship for free if order is over $75. If you want a rubber-center disc, they have a kit for $850 IIRC. They will also price match (which I had them do with the clutch fork using Vertex's price).

And finally... thanks for the comment on my color - it's Diamond Blue, which actually looks more silver/grey than blue.

What kind of transmission is yours? Look like you are paying a little more than AASE quoted me. I went to AASE in Fullerton, CA and Jeff gave me a quote of $1,3xx include labor. The only parts he listed for me are the clutch disk and spring center (930-116-014-02) beside engine oil filter and oil. I made sure he used Saks parts. Yes, he said when they are apart, usually there are more parts need to be replaced but fork and bearing and such on G50 tranny is usually strong. His total labor is only $680.

On spring center disk, I have read many people can't take the rattle. Someone said he has to take it out after several days because it's annoying. So I worry, but Jeff confirmed that the spring center should last longer than the ruber disk.

Call Red Line Services in Long Beach. It's Peter Zimmermann's old place. The guys name is Marc and he knows what he is doing. When I had questions about my LSD he was the man with the answer.

Hey Pete, What is Marc's #?

That is right at what mine was looking at the pre-purchase recipt. Unless you like getting dirty, I'd let a shop do it.

Doug,
So your clutch was done at AASE too? I asked Pete for his opinion on this estimate. Hopefully he has the time to read it.

Like to get dirty? no. Like to save the cash and learn my car, hell yeah. But I don't think I have the right equipments and knowledge. I affraid that I won't be able to adjust/calibrate it right and it only last 6 months down the road.
Well, all it takes is learning how to eat only hotdog for months

Sorry I totally screwed up that post. No I didn't use AASE, I had the same thing done. (new clutch) It cost right at $1,200 in january '07. I do not know AASE, but the price sounds good for that job. I'd love to get under there with you. If you lived in Rancho too we could do it.

Draco came over for dinner and a drive and we both forgot to take a picture. He's got a sweet ride.

.....And to answer your PM I wouldn't recomend the shop that did mine. Quite the battle over price quoted and price charged. They were miles appart......

I went back and checked my records and my labor was $955, so your quote sounds like a good deal. I included more parts in my list because I don't expect to need the engine dropped and split from the tranny for a long time (knock on wood), so I might as well get additional things taken care of. The clutch fork and pilot shaft are two known weak points. The rear main seal is a $20 part that is only accessible when the engine is apart. Then I also did other things like replace sound pad (mine was crumbling) and change the oil sending unit, which was leaky.

rnln: Check your pm for my response to your questions. Please be aware that there is a drastic difference between the rubber hub disc used in early SCs, and the rubber hub disc used in G 50s. The G 50 clutch disc is a reliable, true long-life part, and I would wager that at least 95% of the G 50s in use today are still fitted with a rubber hub disc - unlike early SCs, which, if there are any original survivors I would be greatly surprised.

Isn't that funny....rnln has a post on the first page of that thread.

...and 2 years later, here we are.

What about a forum called zimmerlist.com?

AskPete.com is taken....
