i own a 944, and was thinking in a couple years maybe selling it or parting it out for a nice older 911... around what price range are the '78-'90 years going for? not even like supreme condition, something that runs but needs work.
or even how much did you buy yours for?

Put it this way, the saying is that every 911 is a 20K car. So the cheaper you buy it for the more it will need work. You can find some much cheaper ones out there but they will need work.
I bought my 88 Targa for under 20K.
The year range you mentioned is a big one, I suggest you get copy of Pete Zimmerman's book titled 'the used 911 story'. It is an excellent guide through the 911 saga. It will tell you the difference between every year and will help you determine what year is best for you.
Cheers!

I see this saying here a lot: "they are all $20,000 cars." The idea being that if you pay less than that, figure spending at least that amount to get it right.
But, you are looking at a wide range of vehicles from 78-90. My 84 was $12,500 last Spring and will be needing work in the future. But it runs and looks pretty good right now and I will be able to "pay as I go" and enjoy the car instead of saving longer to buy a more perfect car up front.
From what I saw when I was shopping, you could probably get a decent runner at around $10,000 if you are patient and not too particular about color etc.... But that is about as low as it gets, I think. $17,000 could get you something pretty nice right now. A beautiful late Carrera can probably get into the high $20's easily.

Try the pelicanparts forums, they have all sorts of cars there for sale. At the very least it will start to give you a taste for the price of the different years.
You mentioned 'late 80s', are you talking carrera or carrera G50. I have noticed a bit of a price jump between the two. It's up to you which one you think is best.
