The very first thing I did when I bought my car was to check the oil level while car was nice and hot and front cooler also warm. Then I adjusted the level to 1/2 way on the oil dip stick. Next, I made a mental note of where the Oil Level gauge was when the dip stick was half way. My car's oil gauge seems to line up nicely, meaning half way on the dip stick is half way on the gauge but I bet not all cars are the same and this is why it's a good idea to know where the gauge is when the dip stick is 1/2 way.

Then I just simply glance at the oil level gauge from time to time while I'm stopped at lights.

Of course you should always double check the stick as well from time to time.

I can't tell you how important that is! My own personal daily driver ('77 911S) many years ago had an oil level gauge fail (at about a half-way reading) about the same time that the engine oil cooler developed a pin-hole leak. It would only leak while the car was running, and the oil squirted past the exhaust leaving no evidence behind. I filled up one morning on the way to work, and something told me to check the oil, probably because the gauge hadn't moved in many days. I pulled the stick - nothing! I added two quarts of Chevron 20W 50 to get me to the shop, checked the stick - nothing! After four more quarts I got a reading on the tip of the stick, which meant that the car was about SEVEN QUARTS LOW!!! One more trip to work and I would have probably had a pretty dramatic engine failure! Check that oil, folks - with the dipstick!
