Default 1985 carrera wont start....Performance chip?

Hi all,
Just recently purchased the car, Its stock apart from Monty Exhaust and an aftermarket performance chip the PO had installed. The car wont start now after running fine for 3 weeks except for an occasional light backfire under decelleration, driving for about 45 minutes then with no warning went for the gas pedal in 4th gear and got nothing, the engine stopped and the car wont restart. Doing the diagnostics at the moment (relays, fuel pump) but im suspicious about this aftermarket chip. Do they generally cause problems? has anyone had any experience with this?

Is this an 84-89 3.2L Motronic Carrera? If so, I would try swaping out the DME relay for a known working one. The previous owner probably left a spare for you in the glove box. The DME relay can be found underneath the driver's seat, well....maybe the passengers seat in your case because you are from Australia...not to sure about that one. It's under one of the seats.

Hi all, changed the dme relay and the red fuel pump relay, still no love. Tested the fuel pump by jumping the terminals and it sounds like its working, the battery is struggling now so im gonna charge that up overnight, does anyone have any other ideas before i put it on the tow truck to go to the porsche guys tomorrow? thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Fuel pump quit? It happens. Its mounted on the aluminum front crossmember, by the steering rack. You should hear it hum when the ignition is switched on.

When I jumped the terminals on the red relay the fuel pump was really nosiy, more of a sqeal than a hum, looks pretty easy to replace with a new one. (sorry about the ignorance on part names etc guys, just learning about this stuff) thanks for the help and the replies hopefully ill be driving her again by the weekend.

"You should hear it hum when the ignition is switched on."

Actually, that's incorrect!

The fuel pump only operates when the ignition switch is turned to the "cranking" position
and NOT the "on" position. That's the way the factory wiring was setup.

Happy to hear you found the problem!

At least we didn't have to listen to another chip tirade.

Can you post your test detail so I can learn? I though you said you jump it and it was running?
