1985 Porsche 911 - 198K miles
Historically the most solid feel of any gear has been revese.
Just recently it has started to 'at times' feel spongy or soft.
The 915 has been rebuilt several times, is running Swepco 901, and had all shifter bushings replaced about a year ago. All other gears shift fine.
Any tranny rebuilder have an idea what this might be ??

Very unusual. You probably know that reverse is not synchromesh, so the "internal" feel of that gear shouldn't, theoretically, change. I would look first at the shift tower including the ball cup on the base of the lever, and the condition of all of the moving items including the shift rod in the tunnel. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that you find a shift lever coming apart, or a broken spring or rubber piece inside the tower - something that doesn't occur frequently.

Pete, I think your spot on !
I pulled the shift boot to examine mechanism and the problem stopped.
I assume there was some interferance.
Thanks <I was worried about worn bearings.>

Oh, the old "fixed itself" deal....
JK! Do yourself a favor and order up the $25 worth of bushings to rehab a lot of the weak points in the shifter when you go in for inspection.
