Default Fuel line rupture

My car tried to warn me. For the first time, it failed to start on the first attempt. But it started on the next turn of the key.

Drove for 20 minutes before I smelled it. Gas.

Pulled into a parking lot and opened the rear deck. There was gas spewing all over the engine. I figured the flames would come before I could shut it off. Fortunately, no fire.

Had the car towed to a mechanic so I didn't end up doing the job myself.

I post this as a warning that you may not get much warning. Here's the line that ruptured. When in the car, the offending spot faces forward and isn't obvious. Once you know where to look, it's a spot you could monitor. But I'm not sure you can see it coming. It didn't look this bad until removed from the vehicle.

Glad to see you are safe.

That is why I do whatever Pete says. That hose is somewhat less than $20,000.

Another day of Porsche ownership, another $1000.

I'm getting used to it

Wow! When I wrote the most recent edition of my book I warned to monitor for heat cracks, as your line has, but I've never seen a fuel hose that lost a chunk of its casing! Good to hear that both you and your car are OK!

One of us is just gonna have to post how to do this. My thread was 7 or 8 pages, but it could have been covered in a post or two if someone that could write would do it. Someday....

Pretty horrible, isn't it? Hard to believe it could not be leaking just a day before. I feel very lucky except for the $500 I had to pay to have someone else do it. If I had followed your advice, I would have done it myself ahead of time.

By the way, the mechanic handed back 6 of the 12 gaskets and 3 of the 6spacers... saying they only had to remove one manifold. Does that sound right?

Sure glad this turned out OK for you, 1k is nothing vs. what could have been - you are lucky! I had a similar issue about 2 months ago. Started the 911 then went inside to get phone and wallet, came out to a running car with about a 2 ft. puddle of gas from a small hole off the fuel pump line. Good advice for all to check!

I've never done the repair that way because I always felt that it would get the two sides of the intake out of synch with each other - kind of like polishing only one shoe. I guess that its OK, and that his decision was based on the condition of your old gaskets on the side that was removed. If your car runs well it should be OK, but I think the mechanic should have discussed his "short cut" with you first.
