Default Fuel Pump going out?

I have 84 911 Cab, 116K miles. I've owned it for the last 10 years. I have never had any problems starting the engine. The last work done was several months ago to replace the oil returns. A drive it at least once week. A couple of days ago I get in it to take it out and it wouldn't start. I thought maybe the DME fuel pump relay had gone out so I got a new one and replaced the old one. It wouldn't start the first time I cranked. I checked the fuse, and it was fine, cranked it again and it started. I let it run for a minute and then turned it off and tried to start it again. Wouldn't start. This morning, I tried again, cranked for a long time, wouldn't start. Tried again, after a long crank it started. I backed up into the garage. let it run a couple of more minutes, turned it off and it wouldn't start. I also listened for the fuel pump and couldn't hear it. I thought maybe the fuel pump needs replacing, but it did start a couple of times??? Thought someone might have an idea of what's going on with it.
Thanks,

I have the same issue. My car often wont start if I get in and hit the starter. I have figured out a free solution. Turn the key to "on" and let it sit there for about 5 seconds before you turn it to "start". Fires at first tap every time now. Sounds crazy, but it works every time.

the next step is to start looking for vacuum leaks.

Someone once tried to convince me that sometimes the key doesn't fully turn the ignition. The key rotates, but doesn't make all the proper contacts inside the mechanism.
