Default Opinions about engine Diagnostic units on the market

The check engine light is on and I need an OBD2 type unit. Who has what type and what do you think? I am looking at a $ range of about $100 to $200 and the only report I have read was the INNOVA 3110 and Scan Gauge 2. The pre-96 chevy trucks are dash readable so I dont think I need the combinationn of the type 1.

Check engine light? I assume this is not a pre '90 911?

I know on my honda if the check engine light comes on I can jump the two prongs in the connector for the diagnostic tool and the check engine light will flash in a certain sequence. This sequence tells me what code(s) it is throwing. My suggestion would be to go to a forum that is about your car and search there, there is probably a short cut like that.
