Default Can you backdate an SC?

Is it possible to change the front and rear of an SC to make it look like the pre-73 models? And if so, can it be done by just unbolting the SC stuff and bolting on the new(old) stuff, or does it require any cutting/welding?

It can be done. Ive seen a few well done conversations. Dont think its that simple. Why dont you just buy a pre-73?

Lots have been done. But, it isn't a simple or cheap endeavour.

fenders are different, hood is different. extensive sheetmetal work is required i believe.

I love the look of the old 911s, however they're getting more and more expensive, much more than the SCs, not to mention rarer. In a perfect world I would have a 70, 71, or 73.5 911T with 911S bodywork, 16" fuchs, and the ducktail spoiler as my daily driver, but those cars in good shape are getting pricier every day. However, 911SCs are still pretty common, they're ~10 years newer, more power, bulletproof reliability, etc, and a much higher chance of having A/C. And while the 911SC may not get the gas mileage of a 911T, it would be worth that sacrifice to have A/C, more power, reliability, etc.

The reason I'm asking is because in about 1.5-2 years I stand a very good chance of getting stationed in Germany, and while there I'm going to pick up another 911. I would like to get an SC that's mechanically sound however needing some cosmetic TLC and make it look kinda like the 73RS or something similar. I can do the work myself, as long as it isn't welding. Although I guess I could always just learn how to weld :-)

If I'm not mistaken, your car is Minerva blue? That's my favorite Porsche color. Beautiful car

You'll be able to get by without welding, I believe. But, a bit of fitment, and fussing around to make the new panels go together well.

Ah, that's fine. As long as it looks like a '73 or older I'll be fine. Plus all that extra 3.0 power would be nice on the audobahn

Call TRE. They have done some well known conversions.

I remember seeing the parts on their website, that's where I got the idea of backdating an SC instead of buying an older. Now I'll just have to figure out some ways to get better gas mileage out of an SC, since gas in Germany is pricey.

You have to change the front fenders to early one$$$ if you want to avoid welding.

Also, when you take the rocker panels off, you need to cut off the mounting tabs and either use metal to fill it in or bondo.

You can get by without welding, but it makes the process that much more $$$ and complicated.

No Connection to the car... Dont know anything about it... but I assure you... you will spend ALOT more on an SC conversion than the 24k you can buy one of these cars for... Lets say you get a good condition SC, lets call it 16k. Lets say you buy a conversion kit (another 5-6k minimum?), paint job (another 6-8k). Youve just dropped 30k... and your car is worthless from a collector point of view because its now molested and bastardized.. even if done well... in my humble opinion, you be better off picking up a period correct car... just my humble opinion...

No problem, I see your point. And this isn't a car that I'm going to buy now, I'm just planning for the future. Probably about in a year I'll start my search, I just want to educate myself as much as possible beforehand.

And I don't really mind destroying the collector value, as this is a car that I'll use as a daily driver until it dies, and when it dies then I'll rebuild it and keep driving it or maybe race it. I have a 78SC with only 36K miles, that's my baby, and as far as I'm concerned will never pass 50K miles under my ownership. Because that car is so perfect, I want another one as a daily driver. (I love finding excuses to get more toys )

And I would be looking for an SC that was mechanically sound, but dirty, bad paint job, torn interior, etc. As long as the engine/transaxle are good, and the body is fixable, then I'm okay. And besides, as they say, you can't put a price on happiness.
