One should be performing leakdown tests and removing the lower valve covers to measure guide wear.
Measure guide wear?? I know this has to be in a manual somewhere, but I have not come across checking the wear with the head on the engine. I understand a wiggle test of the valve with the spring off, or a micrometer o/d valve and mini-bore measure of the guide hole with the valve out. What are you looking for with the ex covers off?

There is nothing in the shop manuals about this and honestly, this is not a DIY'er procedure. It takes a good deal of experience to determine how much sideplay is OK and what requires guide replacement. Technique plays a role here and its not possible to show anyone how to do this on-line,...

Basically, I measure the sideplay of the exhaust valve assemblies since they wear faster than the intake ones.

Cool Cat colonoscopy results

Hope all of you are ready for a good laugh at my expense.
Remember what I said about assumptions?
Looks like Peter wins this round of Stump the Chump!
Here's the evidence I was hoping to find.
Anyone have a good used cat they want to sell/lend/rent me?

Now that that's cleared up... Don't forget about your oil consumption issue. As already mentioned, 1qt/500 miles is on the high side.

There is a fuel quality switch on the Motronic brain. Go to 911chips.com to see how to play with it and see if it is set to stock. Also, there is a brown jumper wire at the brain with a conicter in the middle of it. Make sure it is pluged into its self as this is enables the California emmissions setting.

Check the cat. Again if some put a big motor in an early car thay may have gutted it or it just might be dead or pluged. Might try putting a lazer temp gauge on it to see if it is hotter out than it.

Somtimes the O2 can be lazy or bad. May concider replacing it.

I run Tectron through my car's a tank before I smog, replace plugs, replace air filter, make sure the car is hot, the day is cool and do it on a Sunday morning if they are open (they wont be worried you are a BAR agent and they will not know anything about a Porsche.

Good luck.

One of my cars nearly passed the California smog test when I moved back. Missed it by a little. Then discovered the cats were burned out. Put in a new cat converter to be "in compliance." Still took a lot of work to get it anywhere near what the values were with the burned out cat!

Default You're all winners in my book!

It's been such a long thread I forgot who said what. But here you go Keith:

1st) Droops 83, post #9
2nd) BlackPearl, #17
3rd) Lorenfb, #23
4th) Staylo, #30
5th) KeithC2Turto, #34
6th) Peter, #35
7th) Peter again, #40

You get extra credit for the "California Brown Wire" though, Keith. That was just icing on the cake.

I get it now guys, (it's the CAT!)

Any takers on post #45? Stock chip or not??

Goody!

I'll try harder next time!

Glad you figgered it out.

My bet is the builder had a chip in it and gutted the cat. Then when selling took the chip out.

This forum is a great resource!
