Post question/help for a newbie about selling a 911? ...

Hi, okay.. this might be a tad confusing, but here goes...

My brother is in the air force, he's 18. He shipped out 2-3 months ago, and left behind a 1980 SC 911, euro-spec. I would just sell it in the paper, but the problem is, while pretty decently modified, it looks like the engine ate a valve about a month before he was supposed to ship out, and he basically just gave her to me to take care of.

My lease is ending this month, and rather than lug this car around i'd like to try and sell it. Despite the dropped valve, i think the car still has a decent amount of value given it's modifications, and maybe even if i had more time i'd fix the valve and auto-x her. I'm hoping someone would be interested in buying her as a project vehicle so i don't have to part her out.. but i'm not sure about where the best place to list it for sale would be. Also, the title is in my father's name, so my brother's abscense doesn't cause an issue with selling the car.

Any thoughts from you guys? Also, suggestions on what you think a fair price would be for the car? In addition to the (possibly) bent valve, it's in need of a paintjob.

I live in (approx) Seattle, Washington. I'll list the mods if that helps too..

Hard to estimate without a picture, I'm thinking $7-$10k, but I could be way wrong.

Why not contact someone in the local Porsche chapter for a proper appraisal?

You could take the car to John Walker or see Denny at Aker's and have a PPI done prior to advertising. Split the cost of the PPI with whomever purchases the car. Anyone who knows anything in Seattle knows they would have taken the car to one of these guys, so the legwork is already done for them.

These guys can establish a rough value for you and tell you, for certain, if a valve has dropped.

JDub.. john walker is actually the shop that's exclusively worked on the car (for my brother, and same goes for the previous owner). However, i'm just not in the mood to spend money towing it there, and paying for inspection only to be told that the car is indeed pretty screwed up. It's pretty simple to hear the engine run and listen to the valve train clacking, i figured that would be enough... especially because i'm expecting to get maybe $4k for it. I dunno, maybe i'll look into getting it towed this weekend.. sigh..

Buyers inspection aside though, i'm still not sure where a good place is to advertise a modified but somewhat screwed up 911SC for sale?

Since Walker knows the car, why not just call him, explain what you suspect the problem to be, and ask him what he thinks the car is worth?

With the euro spec, questionable engine, etc, I think your $4K price is realistic. It would be a shame if it was a minor fix though, because if it was in good running/cosmetic shape the right buyer would likely pay quite a bit more.
