Post Bump Steer in Older 911s

My other post detailed the '85 911CT I am currently looking to buy. If you read that thread (Problems to look for when buying an '85 911 Carerra Targa) you will see the PPI results and other info I have recieved.

Basically the car is in very good shape but has a bump-steer problem which worries me. I have spoken w/ 2 techs.. One told me that bump-steer like this is common in 911s of this age. Is this true??

I am very interested in purchasing her - but wanted to get more info on this type of problem before buying.

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I didn't read your other post, however, bump steer can show up when the 911 is lowered. There are several solutions: First, easiest, and cheapest, is to add a pair of spacers to the steering rack to raise it up around 10mm. There is also a tie rod end kit to space the tie rods horizontally to minimize bump steer. There's also Bilstein front struts with raised spindles which also reduce bump steer on a lowered 911. You can also bend the steering arms to overcome bump steer. Again these are actions typically done for a lowered 911.

My experience with my two 911's is that bump steer is not an issue until you have played with the front-end geometry (i.e. lowered front ride height). 911's that are set to factory ride height should not have bump steer.

I'll give you a example. The front of my '77 911 was slightly lowered to about 25.5" (floor to top center of fender opening) and I do not have a bump steer problem. I lowered my '84 911 to 24.5" in the front and did experience bump steer (I installed a bump steer kit to correct the problem).

Bump steer is something that can be corrected by either raising the steering rack (with a B/S kit) or raising the front ride height.

Cool

Thanks for all the info everyone!

I made my decision and purchased the 911 today - I hold the title in my hot little hand right now! Sweet!!

Picking her up tonight!

Final Cost: $11,850.00 for the car
plus $1769.50 (for new Mille Miglia Cup 3 rims and Bridgestone Potenza S-02 N4 tires)

I plan on having the B/S problem looked into further by my p-tech. We'll see where it goes. I see that the B/S kit is damn cheap. I'll wait till I have the new rims and tires on her (next Monday) before doing anything though.

Anyway, I'll post some pix tomorrow! and again once I get the new rims and tires on her.

Thanks again to everyone for your guidance and assistance!!
