Unhappy Blown rod ??

Tell me it is not totally bad news..........
Driving on the freeway today my '87 911 engine lost power and I heard a loud intermittent knocking sound from one side of the engine with a new small oil leak from that head cover. I pulled over and had the car towed to my repair shop. The shop is not open until Monday would like to know what it could be. I am affraid to know though, I feel I might know. Any thoughts on what it is and what it might cost to fix ?

It could be a rod , but take it from me a broken rod is a catastrophic noisy failure and even at tick over the damage caused to the engine will be considerable . If the engine still ran suspect something else . It's unusual for such a reliable engine to fail like this unless it has been mistreated or poorly maintained . Keep us posted .
