A well put together 915 box is a rolling art form to drive-
precise, sublime, and the true driver's experience.
Upgrades like a new coupler and a WEVO REALLY make it nice.
It's a zen thing.......................
I got the book in the mean time, project 37 is on the list of things to do now.
It's a slippery slope from there. Soon you'll be saying to yourself, "Hmm...that looks like a good one, I should probably do that one, and while I'm in there..."
My only issue with my 915 is shifting into second. It seems to need a little pause from first to second or it is hard to get into 2nd gear.
Typically, the 1-2 shift on a 915 is the most, well, "unique". Pete Z started a great thread some time ago, entitled (I think) "It cost HOW much?" about the current rebuild costs of a 915- there were many responses; it was a very informative thread. Sorry I'm too lazy to find it now, but do a search, and ye shall find. General consensus seemed to be that the 1-2 shift was a two part process, in order to really take care of the gearbox. Mine's a bit slower from 1-2 than the other gears, but it goes in very solidly. I don't track my car or autox, either-so I don't need to "speed shift". All my other gears are super smooth, easy to find, and I have very little play in the shifter. Proper coupler adjustment made a world of difference for me. I love mine- it makes my 911 experience better in my mind, just as do the sound, smell, and feel of the car- only in a 911! As others have already mentioned, it takes a bit of time, practice and finesse to learn to drive a 915 properly, but once you do, the driving experience is very (did I say very?) rewarding.
