Before you flame me...I have used "Search" and did not find the answer. Is there a way to check for factory short shift without dismantling the centre console and gear lever?

How far in the throw from odd to even gears on your car?
My car is right at 5 inches. I don't think it has a short shift kit 'cause original owner did nothing to the car and it isn't listed on the option code.

Isn't there a spacer under the cover that ain't there on the standard shifter. Its been a while since I did mine and the track car has some crazy wevo racing shifter which is pretty nice.

Total brain fart on my part guys, the '86 is a 915/73 US+Japan and a 915/72 Europe+ROW. Sorry about that guys.
I measured it by holding the end of a tape measure at the center of the **** in 3rd and pulling it into 4th and the center of the **** landed on 5 inches. Simple. Don't tell me I have a short shift.

I know I have the short shift as it is a listed option on the Porsche COA that I received with my 89 911 cab. The travel from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 4th is approximately 5 inches - maybe 4.5 but definitely not over 5 inches.

Great, now am I to believe that I too have a short shift kit? I think 5 inches was pushing it and it was closer to 4.75. Guys with G50's it's time to whip out your tape measures and see what ya got. 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 4th at the top of the ****. How many inches at the ****?
