...And some are bound to be $40K cars.
But don't be put off. It is particularly bad, and it seems to me that with a little due diligence, there are many 911s in good shape to be considered.
Sounds to me like you're on top of it!
I hope you get your 911, and tell us some comparative stories. I initially wanted a 944, but changed my focus to a 911 when I realized I could get a good 911 for $18, while the best local 944 I could find was $15 and needed thousands in body work.
The fellows on this board helped me a lot.

The 944, 928, and 911 are all different animals thats why you must have them all to appreciate them. I have driven well sorted 911's and they are a riot to drive, they give you that feel of security on the edge but if you take it that much further its like a snake and will bite your head off where as the 944 lets you know when you get to the edge. The 928 on ther hand is just a great GT car and you get some serious looks in that car. I will definitely have a 911 in the stable soon..

I still hope to have a 944 one day, and my present evil plan is as a college grad present for my son, in 4 or 5 years. If I can afford it! I think that give me time to find a nice one at a good price, and plenty of time left over to drive it for a season, before handing him the keys. I'd love to share this hobby with him in this way.
The 928. ~sigh~ That is another one that can't get by me without a second look. The second P car I ever rode in, after a 914, and it was stunning.
