Rear Dash on 84 Targa
Does any one know how difficult it is to replace the rear dash/deck? Mine is warped and now there is a gap that can be seen through the rear window. I have checked the usual places, but, have yet to locate a replacement.
Thanks

You could check with one of the Porsche dismantlers (used parts dealer) like Parts Haven in California and see if they have a replacement. Check the ads in Pano or Excellence.

Mine seemed to have the same problem. I was able to get at it fairly easily and reposition it where it meets the glass. Voila, <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" /> good as new.

The rear deck in a Targa is just held on by a few screws into the firewall behind the seats. It comes out easily. If there is space, it could just be that a screw is loose. There are replacements (original and slightly taller to accomodate 6 x 9 speakers) advertised in Panorama.

I have an extra one (black) from an '88 Targa that has the cut outs for rear shoulder belts if you're interested. adding the rear belts is very easy, as your '84 should have the belt mounting point already installed beneath the sound pad.
taking the back deck off is easy. the deck is actually two pieces joined together - a horizontal piece (where the speakers are) and a vertical one (rear seatbacks rest against it).
there are 4 screws that go through the vertical piece, 2 high and 2 low. once the screws are removed, lift the vertical part upwards - there is a small metal 'tongue' which holds it against the firewall. once that is freed, the deck just pulls right out.
