Default 'Ask Pete' New series

i helped a buddy replace all the fuel lines at the weekend on his 73 targa S.
it went well and everythings good, but we found this little fellow pictured below while doing it, lurking unattached to anything just hanging around above the transmission. its rubber covered and sort of spongey material inside, and its sealed at both ends with rubber caps.
so pete - what is it? and where do we put it back? we're stumped!
thanks in advance!

t seems to me, and my memory is really foggy on this one, that might have been a gasket that the factory made to fill the gap between the rear shock tower rail and the main body section of the car. I think that I remember finding something similar falling out of a car (above the bell housing) about 20+ years ago.

red67: I just got confirmation (from the person who might be the finest, most knowledgeable P-car body/paint guy alive) - the snake in your picture is indeed the gasket Porsche made to fill the gap between the rear shock tower rail and the main body of the car. You're going to have to lift that '73 back up and figure out how to reinsert the thing...

Thanks Peter. And Paul. It is not part #13 in this pic, is it? I think #13 is a flat seal.

I´ll check if it is mounted on the opposite side of the rear shock tower rail.

(Yes, it was from my car it fell).

#13 & #14 appear to be the engine bay seals. Next to 13 is the shock tower rail, and next to that, I think, are two foam blocks that push up into the corners of the gap between the rail and the car's body. The piece that red found fits between the foam blocks.
