Congrats to Carl and Mark and happy traveling. I bought mine in December and drove it from New Jersey back to Atlanta. Good times. Hope to see you making lots of post on the boards.

Wow! I can't believe the response I've gotten. You guys are great. I'm really looking forward to the trip. Just finalizing my packing list this weekend. The factory toolkit is no longer in the car, so I've put together my own. If there particular tools that I might not have thought of, I've love to hear.

So far, I have packed a decent assortment of sockets (including the proper spark plug socket), open end wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, a Leatherman, fuses, duct tape, rags, gloves, first aid kit, flashlights, hose clamps, Bentley manual, ...

This is just the travel toolkit, the full set is at home. I'm basing this somewhat on my track tool box.

Thanks again, everyone, for all you help and good wishes. I'll be photographing the adventure and I'll post something after I'm back.

I'd want a factory fan-belt pulley wrench to make the belt-changing easier, a spare DME relay, spare rotor & cap, a 12V test light / continuity tester, baling wire (for old-times sake), radar detector (for new-times sake)...

If you have about 3 business days before you have to go, and no radar detector, then try radarbusters.com. I'd recommend an Escort 9500, Bel STi Driver or, get a Valentine V1 from Mike Valentine's website.

If you have a radar detector but it starts with a C and rhymes with Slobra, better stick to the posted speed limits.

My Bel RD is, so far, about the best $1500.00 that I never spent.

Carl,

How is it to deal with Tom? I've spoken with him on the phone and he seems like a straight shooter. Also, you must be buying the blue 3.2. How did you fine the black which has been sitting there for about a year?

Thanks, Rice

Rice,

Tom Simmons has been great to deal with. A very straight shooter, honest and open. I got a good deal on the car I bought and I'm having his shop do some additional work before I pick up the car - at a very fair cost. I would recommend him without hesitation.

The black coupe was sold sometime before I contacted Tom in Feb. Unfortunately, his site is very out of date. I know from another Rennlister that the red '87 targa is also sold, but is still listed. At this point, I think you need to contact him to find out the inventory.

Hi Carl,
good luck with the drive, this weekends snowstorm was the last of the season. :-)
I just returned from Seattle yesterday (by plane) after buying a 1989 911 targa.
Drop me a line when you get back, we'll have to meet up. I live down the street, in Waltham.
save travels.

It's been a long time, but I wanted to update you all - I got the car and it's home! I've been working on a few small things and waiting for the weather to clear enough to drive it a lot. The drive home was good, but the Recaro SRDs were remarkably uncomfortable. I've since "rebuilt" them to add more padding and support on the bottom cushion (I'll post that in a separate thread). Otherwise, the trip home was good (except for a small introduction to the NY State Police which I'm still working on).

Here are a couple of shots:

The car:

The car, prepped for the long drive (thanks for the inspiration):

The original stock seats, ready for Greyhound shipment back home:

The highlight of the leg through So. Bend, Indiana:

Thanks again for all the advice prior to the trip. I'll be asking lots of questions as I learn about this car.

Carl
