Spring Plate Bushing Spacer
Im finishing up replacing rear spring plate bushings with poly-graphite ones. I have them all fitted and am planning re-installation. The rear inner bushings came with an extra spacer, rounded on one side. Everything seems to fit together well (87 Carrera) without the use of these spacers (several mm thick). If I use it in the inner holder, it doesnt conform to the holder very well and will require that I shave the equivalent thickness off of the bushings in order to make the outer housing seat properly against the body mounting points. It looks as though it 'could' be used in the outer housing to fill the tapered gap between the bushing-end and the end of the housing. Even still, in this location, several mm would have to be shaved off one of the bushing elements. The spring plate seems 'a bit' closer to the body than with the stock rubber bushings, but the thin height adjustment wrench still fits in. It seems to me that I should toss this spacer for my configuration, but given the amount of maching required thus far on the bushings, I'm wondering if I'm missing the value of inserting the spacers somewhere along with the added work. Is it possible the spacers are required for the earlier cars (pre G-50 xmissions)? Is the distance between the spring plate and the body critical for dialing in final alignment? It seems any offset at the torsion tubes is adjusted out during alignment. Thanks in advance for any help.
