Post 0W40 synthetic good stuff?

I've got some Mobil 1 0W40 synthetic (advertised as their "Euro" blend), which I'm thinking of putting in my absolutely leak free '79 SC, which does see the road during the winter, when it's dry. (Don't fret. I never take it out in the salt and slush.) I could put it in the old Volvo turbo, which really does all the work in the winter, and probably deserves the nice synthetic, but I like the 911 so much more, that I'm more inclined to spend the big bucks on the oil for that car. Anyone want to tell me their point of view?

Tom,

There's another thread going on this here too. I switched to Mobil 1 15W50 in my 81SC with 100K miles, and everything was fine. 0W40 synthetic should be good between outside temps of around minus 20 and on-up. Mobil 1 0W40 is, I believe, the normal factory fill these days. It's also one of the factory recommended oils and weights. If I were running mine this winter (and knew where to get some), that's what I would switch to. Then in the Spring I'd switch back to 15W50 for track usage.

I've used the Mobil 1 15W50 for a number of years, too, and without any trouble. I'm thinking that the change to 0W40 may be more than just a viscosity difference, because it costs an arm and a leg. Like $67 for 12 quarts at Auto Palace. This is quite a bit more than the other grades. I guess we'll see ....

Tom,

The sense I have is that 0W40 is much more popular in Europe, which may artificially inflate the prices here on the more limited supply.

For anyone in the UK, AA Service centres (at branches of Halfords) are doing an 0W-40 Mobil 1 oil change for £45 ($65?) including filter, for any car. I have booked my SC in tomorrow and I will let you know how it goes. In the UK, the oil alone costs over £100 if I do it myself.

Get in there quick before they realise what a mistake they have made!

That certainly makes the 15,000 mile oil change interval important.
