Post winterization- ? battery chargers?

Although I try to drive my car as much as possible during the mild winters in S. NJ Im contemplating buying one of those battery charging devices that plug into the cigarette lighter. (so I dont have to keep the battery connected to a trickle charger or charge it everytime I want to take it out).

Are these things safe to use on my '87 911?

Does anyone have any experience with them (good / bad) and if so can you recommend a brand?
TIA,
Dan

Dan,

I do not have any first hand experience with a battery charger that works through the cigarette lighter. On my 1977 and 1984 911's, the cigarette lighter is "dead" with the ignition off. If there is no power to the lighter, then I don't see how you can charge the battery without turning the ignition on...maybe someone can enlighten me because I don't see how it would work.

I use a battery maintainer, but it must be clipped to the battery terminals and plugged into the wall. I have been using this style battery maintainer for many years on my two 911's and it has worked great.
