Post Shift **** removal

I purchased my first 911 a month ago and have a lot of things to tinker with. It is an 87. How are the shift ***** mounted? I tried to unscrew it with a lot of pressure, but nothing. I do not want to break it, but want to replace it. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Since you have an 87, the cap on the ****, with the gear pattern on it, should come off or flip up. You will most likely have to use a small flat blade screw driver. Then you will see a hex head screw. Unscrew it, and it's off.

I purchased an '88 911 Cab a couple of months ago. As I do most of my own work on both my cars and (BMW) bikes I suggest you pick up the following books/mags. (in my order of importance)

A#1) Porsche 911 Service Manual by Bentley, can be found for $95 to $125, I think I paid $98 at Amazon. The other option is the full Porsche Service Set for apx. $500 (I'm not that good myself)

2) Porsche 911 Performance Handbook
3) 101 Projects for your Porsche 911
4) Excellence magazine, if for nothing other than all the ads and websites
5) The Used 911 Story (moreso for when you're looking to buy a car)

I'm sure others will have other suggestions but I highly recommend #1.

HTH, Bill W.
