Thanks JackOlsen, and JCP911S for your helpful advice.
As previously mentioned I have bought the workshop manuals and the parts manual if the view of a very long term ownership. I should also say a quick thanks to everyone else for making me feel so welcome I already feel like part of the family. I have been looking for sometime for the right 911 to purchase I guess the old saying persistence pays. ( plus quiet a bit of luck I might add )
I hope to keep you guys updated to my progress and I hope I don't ask to many silly questions in the future. ( guess thats my apology for any silly questions which may be asked in the future by myself )
thanks again

shiphard,
I am a bit late to this thread but a big congrats in purchasing a classic 911. When the suspension and engine is dialed in properly you will be rewarded with a fantastic performance sports car that will hold or increase in value over time. A great package if you ask me.
I really enjoy a sunroof and it will add value to your car. They sport seats are a big plus too. The normally sell for $4-5K a pair in good condition. The plastic tank was standard on the '73 Carrera RS but could be ordered as an option on other model cars. You have a later model year '72 so it may be original to your car or it may have been added by a previous owner. They were not available in US spec cars. I notice your car has sealed beam headlights which were put on US cars. I would put on a set of H4 lights as they look and work much better.
I'm sure you know this but your car is missing the side Aluminum decorative rocker strip. Your car should also have silver trim on the turn signal lens, silver horn grills, a black anodized metal engine lid grill and lettering. Unfortunately you should only have one, driver's side small brite metal outside mirror. The RHD cars had large round mirrors on the right side only. So what you could do in the meantime is buy 2 large mirrors and put one on each side and pretend you have a RHD that is from Japan (this configuration was manditory for that market)
What color code in on the paint tag on the driver's side door hinge post? Put up a few more photos if possible as it is always fun to see all the details of these great old cars.

Hey Brian,
thanks for tips 1 little question, others feel free to join in, are the h4 headlights better than the h1 headlights ? or is it the other way round, is cost the only factor involved, or is there a noticeable difference. From my little bit of research i have worked out that h1 has two bulbs rather than the 1 that H4 has

lots of threads on Pelican re H1 vs H4 - the H1 is better, but by how much is unclear. They are monstrously expensive and only avail. used. Stick with H4s for a few years is my advice (tho I did buy what was likely the last new pair of H1s in the US).
I would kill those sugar scoops right away tho.
You will want to check out Early 911S bbs also. The residents are a bit stuffy but know the minutiae of Early 911 cars like no other group. They are concoursmobile types. Pelican tends to be more race or performance oriented. The "Hester" saga is posted on both forums. You should read his entire threads.
The all black windshield gasket is likely a newer one - you should have chrome inserts. I think it will look better that way also.
Mirrors are not cheap. You can put BMW ones one that look almost identical to the early rectangular ones. Be careful about the repro mirros and all other repro parts.!!
But there are super quality aftermarket manfs. - SRP, erp, Elephant Racing & Wevo are a few. You can be confident in those.
Was the car red originally?
You may have gotten yourself an incredible deal here.
Here is a short "to do" list...

shipard: H4s use one bulb per unit, while H1s have two bulbs/unit. The H1 arrangement provides more flexibility regarding bulb power, and it also allows for special needs adjustment because each mode is adjusted separately; for instance if you travel nightly on a dark curvy road with little oncoming traffic you might want to spread the high beam pattern without altering the low beam adjustment. Personally I can't think of a need for H1s on the street, I've run H4s in most of my cars and found them to be outstanding.

Hester has H1's. Grady Clay spotted them in a picture that I posted on Pelican when I first got the car. I had no idea how super special they were until I started hanging out in forums like this one. Hans told me that he got them from Europe (those crazy Germans).
I really don't notice their brightness because I rarely, if ever, drive the car after sunset.
Hans mounted a pair of Carello driving lights in the horn grills too. They are even brighter than the high beams of the H1's.
Not that any of this adds anything to the discussion. I just like to post.

I've had my 930 for 10 years and didn't realize it was better to have H4's until I started reading on here and Pelican. I kind of knew I had them but didn't think much of it. I live in Orange County, CA where you can drive without lights most places and with all the street and shopping mall lights it's never really dark Now I find out that it's even cooler if you have H1's.
Just to keep things kind of on topic I have ignored the older Porsche's for the most part...admiring them but not fully appreciating them. The 911S and 911T are quickly becoming my favorite vehicles since I started reading these boards. Congrats on getting your new car and I am enjoying following this thread.

Thanks Peter for the clarification between the two, its a learning curve for me so its a fun journey, its always good to learn more in my books, ( hopefully not the hard expensive way also ) meeting and making new friends at the same time is a bonus. I always liked the older 911's for their classic lines, and the later ones for their awesome speed handling and lines. Their just seems to be something about the old classics which draws you in though. ( other here may know the sickness I suffer from )
At this stage John the aim is to change those mirrors, and then tidy up the little rough edges, I may take it on the track at a later stage........just to see what she is truly capable of......and possibly tune up my driving style in a "safe" open space environment with lots of room to run off and not damage the car.

That is what I'm talking about. I live in San Diego proper and there are so many lights on at night that you could drive around without headlights (except for the fact that it is illegal and probable cause for the police to make contact). The H1's are really wasted on me because I could make do with a couple of Radio Shack flashlights and some Eveready's.
