pete i think i'd rather buy that beauty, in fact any car from you than a much lower mileage car. a wise man once said porsches are designed to be driven. so low milers ain't necessarily better. good luck with the sale.

Pete, another thing to point out is the 7,000+ foot mountain that stands between you and sothern California. A flat map puts you 2 hours out of L.A. but the up and over cost in most cars would be a $70 tank of gas, a full day of driving, and a venture into the central valley fog.

Pete,

The studs my 82 had the gold finish, maybe it was an early production run.

John: Please don't think that I doubted you - I've seen weirder things than this! Man, your old lower studs looked bad, they might have been gold once (cameras play tricks and I can't see them clearly enough), but it's a sure bet that they were never coated!

Thanks, red67! And Douglas, you're absolutely right. I remember driving to N. California once (4 hours + each way) to look at a Weissach Edition SC, which turned out to be greatly misrepresented. That was a real pain, in more ways than the obvious!

Thanks Pete and hopefully the market will pick up after tax refund time so you can have better luck selling your SC.

I figure there's no money in a "The Used 944 Story", so it can't be that. Maybe he's turning his back on us air cooled folks. Sees the writing on the wall. Perhaps it'll be ...

LOL!! No, I'm not turning away. I've found two possible projects that really interest me, and I hope that something will happen with one or both. I've been negotiating, for a while now, to buy the oldest known 912 - actually it's #2 and no one can verify where #1 is. If I can buy the car, it's been in a barn-like environment for more than 20 years, I would love to do the car back to 99-point original, and quite possibly do a book on the restoration. We'll have to see if it all comes together.

Regarding "The Used Cayenne..." - no!

What about a group buy?

We could all pay you the money we owe you for all the free advice we have gotten from you over the years and you could issue stock in the project. We could then trade in our stocks at the end of the project for a one mile ride in the car. You know I owe you a mint.

Hey Pete, hope your plans for the 912 car work out. that will be an awesome resto!
as red67 said in post #31 low milers are not always better.

Reminded me of a story of a kit car builder who went to great lengths and significant investment to buy a very low mileage car to use as a donor vehicle for a kit car build. turned out the engine needed rebuilding anyway as even though it was super low mileage, the car had been used as a grandma's shopper and had done every single one of those miles cold on a short trip to the store and back

Douglas: GOOD idea!

Nick: Thanks! The 912 is documented at about 100K miles, and has no rust. Definitely an interesting project, all of the original pieces are there. I've made a very reasonable offer on the car, but the owner is stuck between sentimental feelings and an inability, but desire, to restore the car himself. I hope he decides to do something before the barn collapses!

Joseph: If only I had made notes on all of the buy/sell transactions that I was a party to, either as the PPI tech, or Dear Abby consult, a book like you mention would certainly be possible! I've talked with owners (sellers) so mad that they had smoke coming from their shirt collar. I've watched very large checks get written, and I've watched people so happy, on either end, that it was hugs for everyone. Oh, to have written down my experiences with unhappy sellers (thank goodness that they don't kill the messenger anymore!) - we even had a few used car lots in the area that refused to allow P-cars to be brought to my shop for a PPI. That is not the way to sell a 911, or maybe it was!

Pete,

Here is an interesting 912 if the deal falls though.

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/car/561496486.html

$16,495 for a 68 912, prices of these cars are really starting to creep up.

Hey Pete,

I'm delighted to hear you're not "abandoning" us, and intrigued with your 912 restoration ideas. To have the #2 912, and for it to be restored by you as you plan it -- surely that car would be destined to be in a museum one day. Maybe not a museum, but, some kind of p-car tourist attraction.

Documenting the process for another book sounds like a fantastic idea. Count me in for two copies right now, but this won't be like the Renn Calendar or anything; I promise I'll actually cough up!

Brent: Thanks for the nice words, it would be great to build a car that might be honored as a display in the Petersen Museum, or similar venue, some day!
