NEWBIE
I have been lurking around this board for a few months and decided to take the plunge. I have found a 75 Targa with a R.O.W. motor. The body is a 7/10 and the motor was rebuilt by Brumos about 18 months ago. This appears to be a one owner car. Any thoughts as to it's value and anything I need to be on the look out for. I plan on have a P.P.I. if we come to terms on $
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
75 is a ungalvanized car. The last year of ungalvanized cars if I'm reading it right. Rust is probably lurking. A 7 out of 10 is maybe actually a good sign if it has never been repainted. Targa makes it worth a little less. Rebuilt engine makes it worth a little more. Personally I wouldn't touch it. But that's just my opinion.
People do own them. Maybe someone who loves their 75 will pipe up. I decided to spend more and get something that would hopefully be less costly on the back end. It was recommended to me to look at something from 78 and up for a first 911. If I had to put a price on a 75 though? I drove an 83 that was mechanically pretty damn good but needed paint, I could have gotten it for $10,000. I wouldn't think a 75 that needs paint could be much more than $7000.75 wasn't a good year for 911's.
I love these pricing questions. Now I get to see how much I have learned!
When you can take this marble from my hand... you may buy a porsche!

Bruce Anderson gives the following ranges for 1975 Targa's in the August issue of 'Excellence':
Poor Condition: $8,477
Good Condition: $9,638
Excellent Condition: $12,903
Those ranges seem kind of high to me at this point in the year and the current economic condition. But, values seem to really depend on your area. Based on the limited info you provided, I would have to guess that this car might be worth anywhere from $5000 to $8000 (if there is good documentation on that rebuild). People have posted recently of buying very nice SC's for $10-12k. The SC has the reputation of being a very robust 911. So, the 2.7 liter cars ('74-'77) should be worth somewhat less due to their motor's poor reputation.
What displacement is the R.O.W. motor? Is it a 2.7? 3.0 SC motors are a pretty common transplant due to their good reliability.
Where has the car resided it's entire life? If in FL, that certainly is better than the snow belt areas where it could have been subjected to winter conditions. These cars are relatively simple, but check everything you normally would on a 28 year old car (that means everything!). Brakes, tires, suspension, Targa top, trim, accessories, etc. Porsche's cost money to keep in nice shape.
As Mike mentions above, definitely have that car checked for rust since it's a pre galvanized car.
The 915 transmission used those years is a very good transmission. It seems 100,000 miles is a typical mileage for having those transmissions rebuilt or freshened up. Though, depending on use and maintenance, those transmissions can go longer without needing work.
Good Luck!

About 1 1/2 ago I brought a 2 owner euro 76 911 Targa with 4spd with 120K and 36k on a documented $8500 rebuild engine with all the required updates. The person I brought it from owned it for about 20yrs and gave me a full documented repair history on the car.I would say the body is a 6.5/10 (minor rust, some bad touch-ups but mostly original paint on a straight body ).The Targa roof is in good to fair condition.Interior is very good but the seats had rips in the bolsters. It has cookie cutters that need to be repainted and inexpensive new tires.I paid $6000 which I thought at the time was a good deal, but I probaly paid a grand or so too much. You have to think of this way unless you do everything yourself in the end your going to have a 10k-11k car if your lucky thats worth maybe 8K.For about 12-13K you can probaly find a really nice SC.The upside if you have 6k and not 12k you can be driving a 911 and do little by little,I think finding the parts and redoing it is half the fun if your realistic about what your capabilities are.But whatever you do get a PPI by a reputable P shop. And like everyone else stated have the rust checked to make sure it is only minor rust.Good Luck.
