OK, guys and gals, I'm ready to try this stuff too. I need to know the best way to take 8mm video, shot with an older Sony HandyCam, and convert those tapes to DVD. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Pete it can be done quite easily. First you need an 8mm player or camera with RCA outs.
THen get a video card for the PC that has RCA in on (poss on a scart extn) then plug and play (using appropriate software......
or
8mm player with USB on it straight into the PC (still need decent video card and software)
Some of the TV tuning cards have inputs (RCA) on them.... hope that this helps you

Adam: My Handycam has red, white and yellow out, but I'm really dense about things like "video cards." Are things like that available at places like Best Buy or Circuit City? If I ask for a video card to convert RCA to PC will they know what I'm talking about, or would an actual product/number be helpful?

Pete, try Costco, even Rite Aid or Wallmart. They all have this ability in the photo dept. It's cheep too. I would love to see what you have stashed away. Even the old real to real stuff from the 60's can be sent off and converted. Did you see Elvis sing on American Idol?

Pete.. the lead that you say the handycam has is an RCA. Video (yellow I think) and the red and white are sound L and R. (Again from memory) the Video card you need will be one suitable to your PC - as for the shops that you mention I dont think that we have those in the Uk (where I am). The sales staff will be able to advise you just tell them what PC with what operating software you have (ie XP or Vista etc). Product number will be dependant on your system requirements.
Hope you get sorted

OK, douglas, I live in Bakersfield... Rite Aid doesn't even answer their phone, Costco only does stills, and I don't think our WalMart even ...well, we won't go there. Circuit City doesn't do it, and doesn't carry the video card needed for Dell notebooks . BUT, Dell does, and I have one on the way - thanks, Adam!
With a little luck Dell will ship me what I need, I'll be able to figure out how to work it (if it works), and we'll have a YouTube of ...well, you'll just have to wait!
Oh, I found one place in B-town that'll do it, Bright House Networks Video Productions, and they ain't cheap at $25/tape - I do two tapes my video card's paid for...

Pete, this is awsome news. (My Dell Inspiron 1520 lap top is currently in crash mode.) I can't wait to see what you have on video. We really should make video a bigger part of this forum. A "how-to" from you would be worth a 1,000 words. And the Canadians could show us video of snow.
