This is long, but attached below is (yet) more information on synthetic oil I received from the author of the Pelican Parts oil article linked from the other synthetic post/thread. There are several links to studies (not just the Amsoil one that is listed first). These several sites have done tests (one is on-going)and lists the oil characteristics the engineers measure, what values are assigned, why you should care, etc. ALOT of info, but should initiate hours of analysis for Porsche folks out there....

The attached article is one of the better comparisons on oils I have seen ; <a href="http://undergrad.nova.edu/kevin/amsoilstudy.cfm." target="_blank">http://undergrad.nova.edu/kevin/amsoilstudy.cfm.</a> Of course, one of the reasons I like it is that it supports my own conclusions that Amsoil is a superior product...Like my article, this was written several years ago and I have had literally scores of E36 M3 owners and M5 owners use Amsoil 0W30 products with great results. I have used everything from the 0W30 to the 20W50 in my BMWs and the 15W40 and 20W50 in my Porsches with good results. I have Amsoil 20W50 in my 1971 Targa right now and contrary to some theories that synthetic oil "pours" out of early magnesium cases, mine hardly losses any. Certainly no worse than nay other 911. I also have several different Porsche owners running Amsoil 20W50 in street/track and pure racing venues with several race wins in HSR enduros to our credit. Despite what Bob M3 says about lighter weight oils, the Porsches like the 20W50.

This site has dozens of used oil anlysis reports form different types of cars and different drain intervals. This data unequivocally shows that 3000 mile drain intervals are a bunch of crap.

Finally, I do not think that any over the counter motor oil for less than $10 per quart is an "overkill" situation relative to additives. This is particularly so for track events. What is overkill is changing synthetic oil at 3000 mile intervals.

One of the conclusions I have come to after all this study is that most of the top of the line synthetics have additive packages that are stout and there are only minor differences. All of the oil companies know how to make oils like Amsoil and Redline but they choose not to because they want people to change every 3000 miles.
