Largest rear tire size on a Carrera..
Just wondering what is the largest tire width anyone has put on a Carrera? I currently have a 1986 Carrera Coupe.
What mods did it take to fit them? Has anyone done 18's on a carrera? Pictures?
Thanks in advance,
--Brian

I'm sure I don't have the largest rear wheels out there, but my 9" wide Carrera Cup wheels just barely fit the rear of my '85. The tire has put a slight "polish" on the oil line in the left rear fender. I've seen people re-route the oil line to gain clearance. The wheels are 17", 993 stock offset. Tires are 255/40ZR17's.
I bet some of those guys with Fikse FM-10's are wider.

Race Car
Early car with SC flares -- but it's the same amount of space as a Carrera.
8x10x17 with 245/275 tires.

I also have a set of 9-inchers in back. With 255's, they fit just about any SC/Carrera flared car without any mods. But if you want the 10/275, you need to crank in a little negaitve camber, roll your fender lips, machine down one of your spring plate bolts and (in my case) re-route one oil line.

Brian, the current thinking is that you can use 8x17's in front with a +25mm offset and 9.5x17" in the rear with a +19mm offset. Tires are 225/45 in front and 255/40's in the rear. This can be accomplished without modifications. (As per Bill Verburg from whom I am quoting)
You could put up to a 245 in front and 275 in back, but they both would require significant modifications as Jack has said. These modifications involved moving oil lines, filing bolts, and adding a little more negative camber. Worthwhile on a track, probably not necessary on a primarily street driven car. Further, if your car is na, you will be getting to the point of too much tire for your motor.
Unless this is a track car, the 225/255 combo should work very nicely.
As for 18's, they work, you can get a 285/35 out back pretty easily, however Porsche does not recomment 18's on the carreras. Plus, you would be adding significant weight from the larger tire and rim.
Good luck.

These are 235/45 & 275/40 on the 8 & 9.5 as discribed by Roamer.

These tires will require significant work to lips, trailng arm bolts and relocation of the oil line further into the crease

Unless I was racing I would stick w/ 225/45 & 255/40 in 17s to avoid the hassels and poorer gearing caused by the taller tire height. At the track the bigger tires are priceless but the rest of the time a nuisance.
