Difinitive information on oil return tubes, please help

Post Difinitive information on oil return tubes, please help

Hello everyone!

I am preparing to replace the leaky oil return tubes on my 1988 3.2 sometime soon. I have been researching this project here and at other sources without finding good, specific information.

If you have done this project before please share your experinces. Specifically, did you remove the heat exchangers? Who made the tubes you installed? Did you use the silicone paste I've heard about? If so, what brand paste? After doing the project, what would you do differently next time you do it? How long did it take you? How long did the new tubes remain leak-free?

There's also some discussion in the Up-Fixin' series of books from PCA about the various collapsible tubes - as I recall, the conclusion was the Porsche tubes were of better fit than some others on the market. For silicone paste (not silicone seal), I use 3M Silicone Paste. Bruce Anderson also discusses this in his "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook".

I replaced my oil return tubes on two differnt 911's a 87 and recently on my 72T. You really do not need to remove the heat exchangers although it will add some time. My concern was breaking a stud or something with the heat exchangers . The 87 replacement was easier then the 72. I recall that it took me abot 3 to 4 hours. Removal was easy, the hardest part was once the tubes were in place was to slide th the retaining down the tube into place. Of course you needs to use the collapsable tubes. The larger tube goes into the case.
If you follow the Pelican Parts article you will have no problem.
