Default '77 3.0 Carrerra identification

Do the '77 Carreras have SC type fender flares? Also, how do I identify one by VIN number?

The '76-'77 Carrera 3.0's did indeed have SC flares.

1976 VIN numbers are 9116600001-1093 for coupe's and 9116200001-2079 for Targa's.

1977 VIN numbers are 9117600001-1473 for coupe's and 9117610001-646 for Targa's.

I always thought that that was same engine as an 81 ROW 3 litre, but I was told recently that it was not.

Is that a magnesium cased engine ?

That's a good question. They must be rare or we would hear more from their owners.

Same horsepower as 81 ROW and aluminum case but I think the cranks were different.

The Carrera 3.0 and 3.0 Turbo engines are basically the same except for pistons and induction systems (naturally!).

The SC engine has a different case, crank, rods, heads,..

These are ALL aluminum-cased engines.

Wow, so the 3.0 Carrera engine is better than the SC 3.0?

Well, the SC engine is a close relative to the turbo 3.3. But in any case the SC was quite a bit down on power, at least until the 204 HP RoW came along.
Somewhat on topic, I'm currently reading Peter Zimmermann's book, and was quite surprised about the enthusiastic description of the SC. Here in Europe, we're used to consider the SC as the result of a conspiracy to kill off the 911, as its introduction meant the end of the Carrera. But then it dawned on me that in the US there had never been a proper Carrera, so the SC must have been a big improvement for Porsche's most important market. Looking at it this way, the SC suddenly makes a lot of sense...

As Steve mentioned the '76 & 77 Carrera 3.0 were the forerunners of the SC. The body was essentially the same as an SC(there are some very minor differences), brakes are SC spec, shocks were Bilstein, optional wheels and tires were better than on SC. Generally the car was lighter than an SC
The C3 engine was the first use of the aluminum 930 block in n/a form. The C3 bottom end and ignition is pure 2.7 spec. The heads and cams are are pure SC spec. Tune gave 200hp@6k. No air pump gave it a nice clean engine compartment(esp w/o ac)

I still have my C3 after all those years

This is very interesting!

What kind of injection system was used on the '77 3.0 Carrera?

Did the '77 Carrera have a whale tail or a ducktail?

The tails were just like the the early 930 w/o a seperate grille at trailing edge of spoiler.

Many Carrera 3.0 cars came without any tail.
