Default Double VIN

Ok so this is one I almost hate to ask because I doubt I will like the answer much but I noticed tonight that my new '82 has two different VINS.

The door plate has a WPOA number (U.S.) but there is a ZZZ (ROW?) plate on the body frame in the front trunk. The last six digits of both match and it has been titled with the WPOA number.

Any thoughts? Was it a "federalized" car?

I believe my '84 does this also, and from memory Pete Z said this was normal.

Of course, mine also comes up as an '84 in all paperwork with that VIN, but as an '85 per insurance. Bizarre.

It's normal. The actual final VIN - market dependent - is only put on the door plate & stickers during the final stage of production.

Exactly. All cars got the ZZZ stamp until their final delivery destination was determined.
