Post Jack Stand

My factory jack for my 1986 911 is rounded at the bottom, not flat (like I would have thought.) When I attempt to jack the car, the jack is at an angle, not vertical, and does not seem safe at all like it could easily slip and drop the car. Anyone with experience/advice on this? Thanks.

That's the way they are designed, and they'll bite on many different surfaces. The angle straightens out a bit as you jack up the car. Always use jack stands as soon as the car is jacked up, jack down until the car is on the stands, and leave the jack in as a back-up. I hate to get mine out, so I use a floor jack, with the bar and disc type adapter sold by Pelican. That's the way to go.
Regards,
Tim

I second Tim's recommendation of the floor jack and jack pad. If you don't have it, Wayne Dempsey's 101 Projects for Your Porschehas a good article on how and where to jack up a 911, particularly on placement of jack stands.

Get a jack pad real soon. Just the other day, we destroyed two factory jacks from using them so much. They are not made using often, but more for emergencies. Not that they fail, they just stripped and we couldn't get them down. So we used a floor jack to jack up the end of the torsion tube to get the remove the factory jack from the hole. That's how stupid people get after a few cold ones. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
